Home Burial Tips

  • We understand how important it is to honor your pet. If you chose to bury your pet, there are local laws, regulations and safety considerations of which you should be aware:

  • Burial should be performed in accordance with your local ordinances. It is your responsibility to educate yourself.

  • If you are renting you will want prior approval from your property owner.

  • If you own and sell your property, local regulations may require you to notify a future buyer

  • Contact your local utilities office at 811 or go to NC811.org to avoid buried gas, water or other utility lines

  • NC state law requires a grave be three to five feet deep. Place at least two feet of soil on top of the body. This depth helps deter pets and wildlife from digging up your pet companion. Consider adding a slab or rocks on top to further deter digging.

  • Pets cannot be buried within 300 feet from any flowing water or public body of water.

  • A concentrated anesthetic is used for euthanasia and at this concentration it is deadly to other animals. Dr. Dixon will provide a Euthabagâ at no additional cost. Euthabagâ is a dignified fabric container with a zipper for respectful placement of your pet and mementos. You may write and draw on it. It’s made with recycled materials, contains no chlorine or PVC and prevents the euthanasia solution from migrating into the environment.

Our thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.
